What does the Ministry of Cultural Development (MOCD) do?
The MOCD is responsible for preserving, promoting, and supporting Cook Islands culture, heritage, and creative industries. This includes language preservation, arts and music, cultural events, and the safeguarding of traditions for future generations.
What cultural events does the MOCD support?
The Ministry supports major national events such as Te Maeva Nui celebrations, community festivals, workshops, and exhibitions. We also partner with local groups to strengthen grassroots cultural initiatives.
How is the Cook Islands Māori language being protected?
The MOCD works closely with communities, schools, and language experts to promote the daily use of Cook Islands Māori. This includes language programs, resources for learners, and partnerships with media to keep the language alive and thriving.
Can I access cultural archives and resources through the MOCD?
Yes, the MOCD provides access to archives of traditional knowledge, oral histories, documents, and cultural resources. These can be accessed by visiting the Ministry or contacting our cultural heritage team. We are also working on a Digital Hub that will allow everyone to access our national archives online, creating a central space to explore and learn from Cook Islands heritage.
